小学6年生から作詞作曲を始め、1972年のTV番組出演を機に、翌年「風に吹かれていこう」でデビュー。“カレッジ・フォークの新星”として注目を集める。
第4作「虹」からポップス系のアレンジを取り入れ始め、第6作「サマー・シェイド」以降は、シティ・ポップ路線へと舵を切り、新たなファン層を獲得。
1979年、音楽家・井上鑑との結婚を機に第一線を退く。
その後もCMソングやスタジオ・ワークを中心にマイペースな活動を続けている。
Artist Profile
Sumiko Yamagata began songwriting in the 6th grade and made her recording debut in 1973 with "Kaze ni Fukarete Ikou" after appearing on a TV show the previous year. She first gained attention as a rising star of the "college folk" scene. Starting with her fourth album, Niji (Rainbow), she began incorporating pop arrangements, and from her sixth album, Summer Shade, she pivoted toward a city pop sound, successfully capturing a new audience. In 1979, she stepped back from the spotlight following her marriage to musician Akira Inoue. Since then, she has continued her musical journey at her own pace, focusing on CM songs and studio session work.

Information
This is Sumiko Yamagata's eighth album and her final original release with Nippon Columbia. The entire album was arranged by Yasunori Soryo, who at the time was creating world-class sounds with "Jim Rock." From the comfortable mellow grooves of "Horoyoi Eve" and "Anohi no youni Hohoende" to the rhythmic and emotionally rich "Ameagari no Samba," every single track is a standout. It is one of the most essential 70s city pop albums, where light-mellow sounds and crystalline vocals blend together seamlessly.
